Welcome

Context

The University of Lille, jointly with the Inria centre, proposed in September 2019, in response to the ANR call for projects, a programme entitled AI_PhD@Lille.

Centrale Lille, in a complementary and concerted manner, also submitted the AI_Engineering_PhD@Lille project in the same year to the same call.

The objective of these programmes is to train PhDs in artificial intelligence and to make contributions to the challenge of acceptability, by working on three aspects

  1.  at the heart of AI to provide intelligible explanations for predictions and decisions
  2.  on the interface between users and AI to transfer AI approaches to application domains
  3.  the development of new artificial intelligence concepts and approaches dedicated to engineering, and their dissemination to the engineering community

For the first point, the AI_PhD@Lille programme benefits from high-level research conducted in the University's information technology laboratories and at the Inria Centre in Lille.

For the second point, the AI_PhD@Lille programme takes advantage of all the research units that cover all disciplines in order to consider AI in an interdisciplinary way. For example, epistemological, ethical and sociological issues are crucial for the development of a responsible and sustainable AI, acceptable for its users. In this programme, one specific application area considered is health, and in particular the prediction and analysis of care paths in chronic diseases.

Concerning the 3rd point, the AI_Engineering_PhD@Lille programme relies on research units and institutions in the engineering sciences to address the transdisciplinary challenges of development, adaptation and dissemination of artificial intelligence for the engineering of the future.

Objectives of the day

With 15 theses started in September 2021 for the AI_PhD@Lille programme and 5 for the AI_Engineering_PhD@Lille programme, an unprecedented scientific dynamic on the same theme has recently been initiated. One year later, we propose a meeting between doctoral students who have artificial intelligence at the heart of their project. The first objective of this meeting is to share reflections after one year of research, concerning both the progress made and the methodological obstacles encountered. The second objective of this meeting is to reflect on the establishment of a network to facilitate exchanges between young researchers.
